Zolfo Springs Cracker Trail Museum. This was my first and only visit to this museum, which I’d been looking forward to for some years now, however given its very limited (weekdays only) hours of operation I was forced to forgo the pleasure until recently when an unexpected weekday off popped up and I thought I’d make the two plus hour journey from my home to Zolfo Springs for an extensive examination of the artifacts on exhibit. I had previously called to verify the hours but in an abundance of caution called that morning to be sure and was told that yes, the museum is open all day long and the outbuildings are only open during special events. So I head off on my merry adventure to explore a new-to-me museum only to arrive shortly before noon and be informed by the person behind the counter that she is closing up and going home for the afternoon but after hearing my explanation of the circumstances surrounding this visit she said she would stay as long as it took for me to explore the exhibits. This site may be operated by the County and that may be the reason for the lack of adherence to their stated hours of operation because a few moments after this conversation a uniformed County employee arrived to take over for the woman behind the counter and told me to take my time that he would wait as long as I needed. Needless to say this created a hurried environment and I rushed through this visit and was able to give only a cursory viewing of this museum which was quite an impressive collection of local artifacts and were in and of themselves well worth the visit. All in all a very substantial museum. However, I can’t recommend this site to anyone given that it may as likely be closed upon arrival as it is to be open, regardless what the hours on the door, brochures, website or anyone answering the phone might say.
